EV Charging Scam – How Did It Happened?

For testing our electric Creta long-termer, we witnessed an experience that shook us. Watching the cluster show only 8-10 percent battery remaining, we thought to charge it quickly. We took the SUV to the Jio BP charging station. Soon, a notification popped up on our phone saying the Creta was at maximum capacity. Then we downloaded the invoice, and it was something we never expected.

The invoice showcased that the Creta EV consumed 51.90kWh. Seriously, the trim of Creta that we are driving is equipped with a battery pack of 51.4kWh, then how come we got charged to a point that even the battery cannot hold. We took this matter ahead and emailed it to the official authorities to know exactly what was going on.

The authorities noted our grievance and replied saying that the invoice is correct and the charging backlogs even suggest that the charger has delivered 51.9kWh units of energy. But how? Well they also lend us an explanation about how this happened.

According to the sales and customer support, the thing that happened is a common behaviour happening during an AC charging (slow charging) period. During the power conversion from DC to AC, the on-board chargers are not fully efficient and end up losing around 6 to 10 percent. Hence more energy will be consumed to fully charge the battery, even than its rated capacity (because of the conversion losses) and will reflect in the energy dispensed from the charger.

For starters, it is a loss of power that happens quite every time you plug your vehicle for slow charge. That said, this isn’t any scam but actually is a power loss that happens during conversion.
